• What are Syfe Select Themes?

  Syfe Select Themes is a way to apply thematic investing to your portfolio. Many investors want their portfolios to reflect their values and investment preferences. With thematic portfolios, you can do just that.

  Syfe Select Themes offers five different portfolio themes: ESG & Clean Energy, Disruptive Technology, Healthcare Innovation, China Growth, and Global Income.

  What is the advantage of Direct Indexing?

  Passive investment portfolios are usually made up of Exchange Traded Funds (ETFs) which in turn hold individual stocks. ETFs charge a fee for managing dividends, rebalancing and among other processes. Syfe uses its proprietary technology platform to match ETF performance and directly invest in individual stocks. The fee savings of up to 50% are passed on to you.

• How safe are Syfe Select Themes?

  All forms of investments carry a certain degree of risk. Clients should consider their personal risk appetite and evaluate it against the risk rating of each Syfe Select Themes portfolio, which are in turn determined using weighted average risk scores of the individual ETFs within the portfolio. 

  In general, thematic portfolios should be used to complement your core investment holdings and should make up less than 30% of your overall portfolio allocation.

• What does the portfolio risk score mean and how is it calculated?

  To help you determine whether a Syfe Select Themes portfolio is aligned to your risk appetite, we provide the portfolio’s overall risk rating for your review.

  We calculate this rating by using the weighted average risk scores of the individual ETFs within your portfolio. Each ETF in our investment universe is first given a risk score between 1 to 5 based on its underlying asset class, geography and sector exposures.

  A score of 1 is very low risk; a score of 5 is very high risk.

  Our starting universe of possible investments comprise over 100 carefully selected ETFs that are low-cost, highly liquid and track their benchmarks closely.

  Each ETF is then classified into broad themes and given a risk score between 1 to 5 based on its underlying asset class, geography and sector exposures.

  ETFs that best represent our theme and offer the best potential for risk-adjusted returns are then selected for possible inclusion to Syfe Select Themes.

• Can I edit or change the composition of a theme?

  Syfe Select Theme portfolios are managed by Syfe’s investment team and as such are not editable once created. The ETFs in the thematic portfolios have been carefully chosen to offer you the most efficient portfolio allocation. New themes and sectors are constantly monitored for possible inclusion in the portfolio. Changing the individual ETFs may result in your returns being negatively impacted over time.

  However, you can use the Syfe Select Theme portfolio allocations as templates. If you wish to tweak certain asset allocations, you may also do so by editing your portfolio at the portfolio creation stage.  You’ll have the flexibility to choose your portfolio holdings and decide on your portfolio weights.

  As per Securities and Futures Commission regulations, we are required to verify your identity by an initial deposit of not less than HK$10,000 or USD 1,300 bank transfer from your bank account, in order to open a Syfe account for you. After account opening, there is no minimum investment amount to get started.

• How are the fees saved from this stock-based portfolio?

  By directly buying the underlying stocks that make up an ETF or mutual fund, our approach helps investors save on external fund expense fees. For instance, to gain exposure to the emerging financial technology sector, you may invest in an ETF that holds innovative companies transforming established industries like insurance, investing, fundraising, and third-party lending through digital solutions. An ETF that tracks this sector would incur an expense fee of 0.68%. Similarly,  a mutual fund with similar exposure, such as BGF FinTech Fund, carries fees of as much as 1.81%.

  Overall, if you were to use ETFs or mutual funds to represent the key themes within our Disruptive Tech portfolio, the total external fund expense fees would add up to anywhere between 0.6% and 2%. By investing directly in individual stocks, you won’t need to pay any external fund fees beyond Syfe’s standard annual management fee. Our management fee covers your portfolio management: brokerage costs, dividend reinvestment, and portfolio rebalancing.
